A Freshwater Fisherman in Thailand

A Freshwater Fisherman in Thailand Review

A Freshwater Fisherman in Thailand Overview

Stand outside a palm-shaded wooden hut in a Thai fishing park, and do battle with a colossal Mekong Giant Catfish. See an exotic Featherback pulled from a muddy canal by a rural Thai angler in a quiet, backwater town. Share a few beers and a magnificent catch of Rohu with a few new friends, and experience a fishing competition with an angry Thai bar-girl. Catch your first double-figure Carp sitting by the banks of a cliff-lined lake near the border of Thailand and Cambodia, or cast a lure from a deserted tributary close to the Bridge over the River Kwai, with only the birds and mosquitoes for company. Whatever your fishing preference, this country undoubtedly has it. This book will take you on an exciting journey through the diverse variety of freshwater fisheries in Thailand, and show you how to catch the incredible fish that swim in them. Peter Jaggs provides a humorous and panoramic portrait of the species, tackle, baits and waters; as well as some of the characters that the reader will encounter during his angling adventures in Thailand - the Disneyland of freshwater fishing. 'An informative and long-overdue guide to freshwater fishing in Thailand.' JEAN-FRANCOIS HELIAS, FISHING ADVENTURES THAILAND 'Especially useful as an ebook; the unknown species you catch in Thailand can be targeted and identified right by the water's edge on your mobile phone or ebook reader.' ROB HOGG, ENGLISH COARSE FISHERMAN

Makes A Hard Man Humble

Murray Head was dead on. One night in Bangkok certainly makes a hard man humble. Trying to characterize Bangkok is like trying to explain Las Vegas - clamor, lights, food, free time - but one cannot truly sound how one feels in whether place. It has to be experienced in person.

Bangkok is invigorating, scary, exciting, happening, and wonderful all at the same time. From the second you arrive at Suvarnabhumi, Bangkok's International Airport, you will recognize that you are not in Kansas anymore.

Hotels Resorts Huahin

Traffic zipping down small alleyways, skytrains overhead, long-tail boats in the canals, and curious lights everywhere. You have arrived in Bangkok, the City of Angels.

Clamorous Bangkok nightlife attracts a lot of people, mostly tourists from the West. All bars, clubs and discos are all the time crowded. Noise, smoke, distinct shows and Thais massage come to be the symbols of unforgettable Bangkok nights. Anyone and all is effortlessly ready if the price is right.

As Thailand's capital, Bangkok boasts the superior monuments of country's past. Bangkok's best temples contain Wat Trimitr with its five and a half ton solid gold Buddha, Wat Po with its huge reclining Buddha - the first original massage school in Thailand, (massages are avalable.) and Wat Banjamaborpitr - the White Marble Temple - one of Bangkok's most beautiful temples with impressive Thai architecture. Even if you're short on time you should visit with the Grand Palace - Bangkok's most preeminent landmark is a old abode of the King of Thailand.

In November Bangkok hosts the Loy Krathong Festival. Loy Krathong is preeminent in distinct styles. This special festival includes a revival of original ceremonies, games, contests and competitions: Krathong Competition, and Thai costume contest. The festival lasts some days. You can select only one of them - and see the most beautiful Thais traditions and the most impressive national dresses.

One night in Bangkok will only have you longing for more. More bars, more clubs, more food, more shopping, more of everything.

But, tear yourself away from the neon lights of the big city, and head for the beach. An hour or two drive away and you can be in Pattaya, Hua Hin, Cha-am, or Jomtien. A short flight will take you away to the islands; Koh Chang, Koh Samui, Phuket, Koh Phi Phi, and many many more.

Or, for more adventure, head northeast to the Isaan region of Thailand and perceive all that it has to offer. Temples, markets, mountains, and the best Thai food in the country.

So much to do in Thailand and so little time if you are on holiday. You will just have to make the most of your short stay and then on your flightr home, start to plan your next Thailand adventure.

Yes, One night in Bangkok does make a hard man humble.

Hua Hin - Thailand's incommunicable Hideaway

No visit to Thailand is faultless without a trip to the gorgeous resort beaches of Hua Hin. Settled 200 miles south of Bangkok, Hua Hin is one of the oldest and most favorite sandy destinations in the country.

While many of the other beach resorts in Thailand - along with Phuket and Samui - have been over developed and overrun with tourist hotels and restaurants, Hua Hin has retained its primary charm as both a resort and a working fishing village.

Hotels Resorts Huahin

The beach is over five miles long and surrounded by some of the best, yet least expensive, golf courses in the entire world. The city itself was discovered more than 80 years ago by King Rama Vii. He chose the place as his home away from home when he wanted to leave the heat and humidity of the capital city.

Once King Rama built his palace in what had up until that point been a fishing village, other Siam nobility were soon to follow - which fueled the growth and popularity of Hua Hin.

The king's palace - called Klai Kangwon, which means "Far From Worries" - remains an valid royal residence and favorite attraction to this day. Collective tours are easy to arrange - even when members of the royal family are staying there!

Be truthful covering the palace, however, because protection is very tight and any type of Collective intoxication or other bad behavior near the palace is dealt with very strictly by the local police officers.

While the main tourist operation is to lie out on the sandy beach and have locals bring your drinks or provide massages, there are sites to see when you've decided you've had your fill of fun in the sun.

Most of the wealthiest families in Thailand have built their summer homes near the palace or on the beach, which means there is gorgeous architecture to see as you stray around and recognize Hua Hin.

Khao Takiap is a large hill that is filled with gorgeous Buddhist temples and offers the best overhead view of the city, the port and the ocean. It is a four-kilometer hike, so you may want to rent a bike or bicycle to take you to the top.

The Hua Hin railway center is one of the oldest stations in Thailand and is so gorgeous that it is considered one of the country's landmarks.

The Spirit Houses of Brassiere Beach has a verily odd history. Legend has it that the daughter of a local fisherman was eaten by fish because she was too gorgeous to live in the world. Today, men and women leave brasseries on the beach in order to ask the gods for good luck.

Namtok Pa Lau is an 11-tier waterfall Settled about 30 miles covering of town. It is easy to get to by bus, and is particularly favorite on hot and humid days.

Wat Huay Mongkol was where famed monk Luang Phor Thuat lived his life. He was known for performing miracles and his previous residence is now a large Collective park featuring a giant statue of him as its centerpiece.

At night Hua Hin comes alive with a large open-air store where you can buy nearly whatever under the moon, and see what types of arresting fish and fruits the locals like to eat. You can also sample any of the many perfect seafood restaurants that surround the market.

If you want to sample local products, look for things made from Khommaphat, which is a type of cotton unique to the Hua Hin region. They use it to make all from shirts to large decorative pieces of art.

The one downside of Hua Hin is that it does not have as active a nightlife culture as the other beach resort towns in Thailand. Your best bet is to hit the Soi Bintabaht and Soi Selakam areas where you can find local beer bars. By royal decree, there are no go-go bars in town.

Hua Hin has three important regional festivals, including:

o The Thailand's International Kite Festival is held from March through May in Hua Hin while even numbered years. It features stunt kites, big kites, dinky kites, high tech kites, primary Thai kites, and displays of international kites.

o Hua Hin Jazz Festival is held through the month of June on the beach. It attracts world-class Jazz musicians and is considered one of the most favorite events in Hua Hin.

o Hua Hin Vintage Car Rally. Sponsored by Vintage Car Club of Thailand and the Tourism Authority of Thailand, the car rally is held every December. All of the cars in the rally are vintage from the 1920s, in celebration of when the King discovered the city.

Getting to Hua Hin is easy from nearly any part of Thailand. It is hooked up to most of the major rail lines and you can get a direct train from Bangkok. There are also several bus routes from both Bangkok and Malaysia.

Overall, the weather is temperate. There is a brief rainy season in the spring, but the showers tend to be very short and are often over in five minutes or less - so you can get right back to the sun and fun!

You will observation that there are many, many more Thai tourists in Hua Hin than in the other national beach resorts. While westerners do come to Hua Hin, there are far fewer of them here than in Phuket or any of the other beach towns.

This leads to a safe bet charm, because Hua Hin has yet to be thoroughly corrupted by tourists - and you can feel like you are having a very authentic Thailand vacation experience!

So, next time you are in Thailand, hop on the train and check out the gorgeous beaches, waterfalls and temples of Hua Hin. Think it a royal experience!

You'll be glad you did!

Bangkok & the Beaches Handbook (Footprint - Travel Guides)

Bangkok & the Beaches Handbook (Footprint - Travel Guides) Review

Bangkok & the Beaches Handbook (Footprint - Travel Guides) Overview

Thailand is an Asian cliché. Exotic, inscrutable, hot, Oriental, delicate, sumptuous... Take the first few hours of an average visitor's arrival in Bangkok. Off the plane and into a gleaming new airport terminal. Lilting Thai voices, and a strange alphabet. Into the city along an elevated highway in the company of an apparently deranged taxi driver with a magic diagram inscribed on the roof of his car, a picture of a long-dead king lodged reverently in the tachometer, a cheap gold Buddha glued to the top of the dashboard, and a garland of plastic frangipani hanging from the rear-view mirror. Out of the taxi and into a quiet, cool hotel with copies of the Asian Wall Street Journal artfully arranged in reception and CNN in the bedrooms. Or into a small guesthouse run by a Thai bobbing to Bob Marley and offering sweltering rooms the size of chicken coops for the price of a dozen eggs.

While most people do touch base in effervescent Bangkok, and some grow to love the city, for many it is just a means to an end, a way station en route to the islands, beaches and towns of the south. With 2,614 km of coastline, there's a lot of potential. But, while many come to Thailand in search of a simple hut on a quiet beach, the challenge is to find one before the next person - or the next 10,000 people - get there. The pace of change is sometimes bewildering. Bear in mind that in the early 1970s Phuket was a forgotten backwater. But it is still possible to find simple bungalow accommodation for a couple of dollars a night, and probably a quiet beach, clear waters and an empty hammock.
