Thailand's Short Term Economic and Political Perspective 2010
BANGKOK
Feb. 21st 2010
Thai economic growth is projected to rise between approximately 4 to 5 percent on higher exports and rising economic fundamentals in 2010, reflecting increases in tourist arrivals and employment, as well as the new AFTA Asian Free Trade Agreement. However, political difficulties and domestic turbulence should also be factored in. The current situation is littered with the potential for highly unpredictable events and creating an uncertain climate.
Gold has recently decreased about $50 per ounce on lagging demand in world markets with an overall 11% drop in demand in 2009 from 2008. Locally, current prices have relaxed with prices in Bangkok at 17,300 baht for buying rates, while gold was selling at 17,400 baht earlier this week.
This week the baht was trading at just under 33.2 to the dollar while the Japanese yen traded at 100 yen to 36.33 -36.45 baht. The battered euro was trading at near 45 baht to the euro.
On the Stock Exchange of Thailand (SET), shares have recently declined about 10% from their 9 month highs on January 10-11, 2010 to current market levels of approximately 700 points for the main index. Friday in Bangkok the SET was up over four points to close at 700.44.
Most European and Asian markets lost momentum Thursday, plunging in response to the U. S. Federal Reserve Bank's surprise announcement of a.25% rise in the emergency loan rate it charges to banks.
Negative risks weighing on Thailand's economic prospects include the uncertainty posed by the fate of approximately 65 industrial projects worth billions of dollars still awaiting the Central Administrative Court's ruling on whether they will be allowed to continue due to environmental lawsuits brought by local villagers, threatened protests by the UDD/ Phuea Pandin and Thai Red Shirt allied activists at Bangkok's Suvarnabhumi International Airport and other venues, as well as fears of political threats and uncertainties regarding the asset seizure of former deposed Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra's $76 billion baht against senior political figures and Supreme Court judges involved in the final decision, due on February 26. The assets were seized amid allegations of corruption and Mr. Thaksin's failure to return in August 2008 to appear to face charges after being allowed to fly to Hong Kong after posting bail to travel to the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing.
Since then, Mr. Thaksin has made a variety of countries his temporary home including London, Dubai, China and Cambodia, while recent tensions between Cambodia and Thailand have also emerged at a variety of international high level meetings, such as the recent ASEAN meeting in Hua Hin. Hun Sen has dubiously offered the former Thai prime minister free access and a safe haven while appointing him Cambodia's economic advisor, a move the current Thai government in Bangkok considers interfering in its sovereignty, judicial system and internal politics, allowing that Thailand and Cambodia have extradition treaties, which Cambodia has failed to fulfill in regard to Mr. Thaksin.
Mr. Thaksin, his wife Pojamarn and their three adult children have faced numerous corruption investigations which political activists, rural supporters and allies supporting the former prime minister's camps view as politically motivated. The final verdict is due to be decided shortly now that final arguments have been delivered.
Thai-Cambodia Relations: No Love Lost
While relations with Cambodia were at near crisis levels last month, neither Hun Sen nor Thailand's Prime Minister Abhisit Vejajiiva seem willing to reconcile their positions.
Some political analysts and Thai media lay partial blame on Mr. Abhisit's government for the appointment of its foreign minister, alleged to have overtly insulted the Cambodian leader, for getting its diplomatic relationship with its neighbor off on the wrong foot.
The Cambodian Prime Minister and his wife attempted to visit a Buddhist religious site near disputed border areas along the Thai- Cambodian border in early February, sparking fresh Thai government initiatives to calm the issue, where forces fighting border skirmishes had left approximately a dozen Thai and Cambodian troops injured or dead within the last year.
Last week a Cambodian government website launched a fresh war of words in its spat with Thailand, making a variety of volatile accusations against the current Thai Prime Minister, Abhisit Vejajiiva. It was also reported in Thai media that Hun Sen's wife had invoked curses aginst the Thai prime minister at a temple near their border. Hun Sen is also reported to have invoked occultic curses against the Thai leader.
Trouble in Paradise...
The largest Thai bank, Bangkok Bank was prescient to close its main office and headquarters to customers at noon Friday, Feb. 19 after about 1000 protesters gathered and a police contingent of approximately 500 officers closed traffic to the area. The protesters, from the Red Shirts/UDD, or the United Front for Democracy Against Dictatorship are seeking revenge and garnering support for what they allege is financial support for Prem Tinsulanonda by the bank's owners.
Meanwhile, last week in Bangkok between Saturday night and Sunday morning, a pair of explosive devices were intended to gain publicity in the upcoming case involving former Prime Minister Thaksin. In the first, an M-79 grenade was detonated in a parking lot near the Government House, where officials and leaders, including the prime minister, frequently work.
The second explosive was a 3 lb. C-4 bomb that had been placed near the perimeter of the Supreme Court's Division for Holders' of Political Offices, where the asset seizure case will be decided. It is widely thought that violent acts and protests will likely increase before the upcoming case is decided. The device was safely removed and disabled by the Bangkok Metropolitan Police Bureau's bomb squad. More protests have also been taking place in venues throughout Bangkok and in outer provinces, but so far have remained mostly peaceful.

About Malta - Malta Prehistoric Temples
Malta and Gozo, located in the centre of the Mediterranean, have a rich history spanning over the last 7000 years or so! There are temples, goddesses, wrecks, hypogea, cemeteries, Bronze Age villages, catacombs, tombs, villas, baths, 'cart ruts', caves, auberges, palaces, fortifications, and so much more. All this is sure to interest any historian, archaeologist, or sightseer! But of all these, the oldest and perhaps the most spectacular are the prehistoric temples scattered all over the islands.
Malta Archeology
The evidence available suggests that man reached the islands by boat from Sicily about 7000 years ago. They were farmers who built extraordinary structures out of large slabs of stone. There is little argument that these structures were in fact temples because they are monumental in size, contain many symbols and altars, and show no sign of domestic use at all.
Inside the majority of the temples, statuettes (as well as one monumental statue) have been discovered which represent an opulent mother goddess, also known as 'The Fat Lady'. It is believed that she was worshipped by the farmers in order to have good crops in the typically hot weather.
Even the shape of these temples is unique; they are either lobed, or made up of a series of apses. The incredible thing is that when viewed from above (as a bird's eye view) the temples seem to have the same shape as the mother goddess, with large thighs! Interestingly, there is no such structure anywhere in the world which is remotely similar to our Maltese temples. This emphasizes the uniqueness of the island, present from even 7000 years ago!
There are some twenty three temples around the island, most of which stand alone or in pairs. These span from around 3600 to 2500BC, making them even older than the Great Pyramid of Egypt, which dates to 2550BC! These include the Ggantija temple, which is the oldest known temple found on the island of Gozo, Hagar Qim and Mnajdra Temples, Tarxien Temples, Kordin Temple, Skorba Temple, and Ta' Hagrat Temple, amongst others.
There is also a prehistoric underground burial know as the Hal-Saflieni Hypogeum which is associated with the Tarxien Temple, in that it is said to be its related burial ground. It is also completely unique and seems to be a cut-out copy of the temples, but underground. Apart from offerings and skeletons, two incredible chambers were discovered inside, known as the Holy of Holies, as well as the Oracle Room, known for its incredible use of sound. This hypogeum has been recently restored, lit up, opened to the public and been acknowledged as a UNESCO World Heritage site. But book ahead, as only groups of 10 are allowed in every hour and this is surely not one to miss!
Maltese Culture and Traditional Rituals
The rituals that took play within the temples were also very interesting and unique. Apart from the statuettes of the mother goddess, many other symbols were found, including phallic symbols, carved farming animals, and a curly spiral design which has become somewhat of a trademark on the island. The temples are divided into private and public areas where the priests and public were divided. Altars were used to sacrifice animals to the deities, and holes at the entrances were used for libration; the pouring of liquids such as water, wine or blood, to the goddess.
This incredible period in our history ended very mysteriously and abruptly! At the end of what is known as the 'Tarxien Phase', which is the latest phase in this period, the temples went completely out of use and it is almost as though everyone disappeared. In fact, at a later phase a new group of people moved into the temples and used them for completely different reasons.
Archaeologists still wonder what may have brought such an abrupt end to one of the most complex and advanced prehistoric cultures of its time!

5 Common Reasons Why Foreigners Would Set Up a Company in Thailand
Common businessperson operates a business as life's primary or secondary source of income with the intent of growing the company to earn sufficient profit. Establishing a company in Thailand can be a serious moneymaking engagement though for others, it might be just a piece of front line. Depending on each individual's intention, below are some very common reasons why foreigners would set up a company in Thailand.
Foreigners cannot own a land in Thailand and setting up a company is one way to go over it. A Thai registered company with majority of Thai ownership can buy land in Thailand. In fact, it has been very common in the past that a foreign national acquires interest in Thailand as minority shareholders in a Thai majority owned company. Foreign companies with BOI privileges or "BOI sponsored companies" can also lease or own a land.
For most Thais, obtaining a visa to other countries is a struggle. Setting up a company in Thailand is one best way to help your Thai girlfriend/fiancée/spouse to get a visa. You can hire your partner to work in the company or better yet make her one of the shareholders. This way she can build an employment record and help her become financially stable to make her qualified to apply for a visa. This is very common for Foreigner-Thai couple living apart and would intend the Thai partner obtain a visitor visa to another country.
Thailand is known world over as the land of smiles. But in contrary, others call it land of scams for some reason. If you have a girlfriend or fiancée and you plan to get married, you may consider protecting your asset by setting up a company where both of you are shareholders prior to proceeding on the legal process of your marriage. We can never predict the future. For you all singles, it is never too late.
In Thailand, there are agencies and law firms who can assist foreigners obtain a one year Thailand visa depending on nationalities and country of origin. However, visas issued outside of Thailand may require a visa run every 90 days. It is a hassle for some to travel to the border every 90 days. If you own a company in Thailand, you can obtain the one year visa just within Thailand and can stay for the period of 1 calendar year without the need to leave the country at all.
Obtaining a work permit in Thailand is not an easy task for foreigners or companies with foreigner employees. The Labor Department is becoming stricter in providing this permit lately and the company must also comply with all documents required. Setting up a company in Thailand with initial capitalization of at least 2 million baht is by far the easiest and fastest way of getting a Work Permit and long term visa to Thailand.
Registration of company at the Ministry of Commerce can now be completed on the same day as the registration of the Memorandum of Association given that all registered shares have already been subscribed, statutory meeting has been held, promoters have handed the business over to the directors, and the 25 percent payment of the total shares has been paid by the shareholders. For companies that fall under the definition of Foreign Business Act, the initial capital is 3 million baht 100 percent fully paid up (exceptions may apply). However, for those that do not engage activities specified in the FBA, the initial capital requirement is 2 million baht fully paid up. Other minimum registered capital requirements may also apply if the company is to employ foreigners.
You may consider hiring a law firm in Thailand who speaks both English and Thai languages to assist you with Thailand Company Registration and to process your Thailand Visa and Work Permit.

Cheap Phuket Hotels - How Good Are They?
When you are planning a Phuket vacation, the first step is to look for a decent yet reasonably priced hotel. Cheap Phuket hotels are available in plenty for all types of travelers.
The rising popularity of Phuket as a tourist destination has led to the construction of a slew of hotels in all price brackets. Now, for the tourists visiting the island beach resort, choices are many - from luxury resorts with every conceivable facility to minimalist hotels for the budget-conscious traveler.
The definition of 'cheap hotel' is different for different travelers. For many, a cheap hotel means just a room to stay like in a hostel or a guesthouse. However, for those traveling with families, this may not be comfortable. According to the price range desired, it is possible to search for a hotel in Phuket. It can be done either before landing in Phuket or even after arrival.
If 'cheap' means paying around $20 per night, online booking agents offer the best bet. Sometimes, if you are incredibly lucky, it is even possible to corner a steal deal for less than $15 per night. Most of these are 2-star hotels suitable for families.
When 'cheap' means dirt cheap, hotels for less than $10 are available in Phuket town. These are decent places concentrated along the Phang Nga Road and Ranong Road. Even the popular beaches of Patong, Kata and Karon have some cheap lodgings. During low season, some of them even go for as low as $5. These rooms are nothing to rave about, but are good enough to stay for a few days. Many travelers on tight budget opt for these cheap Phuket hotels for their low rates.
Cheap Phuket hotels do not necessarily imply that you will be ending up with below-par facilities and service. At times, good hotels offer amazing discounts to lure guests during off-season.

5 Multi Centre Dubai Luxury Holidays
Dubai luxury holidays are now more popular than ever, and it is easy to see why. It is one of the fastest growing, most diverse and exciting cities in the world, with an outstanding range of luxury experiences on offer. Increasingly, travellers looking to get the most out of their Dubai luxury holidays are combining a visit to the city with a stay somewhere else - another place in Dubai, or a location in another country all together.
Often these multi-centre holidays will contrast two very different experiences. City and beach holidays in Dubai, for example, allow a visitor experience both the hustle and bustle of the city as well as the relaxation of a beach holiday. Perhaps most exciting are the multi-centre holidays designed to give a taste of two very different cultures - Hong Kong, Thailand and Sri Lanka are just some of the destinations that can be combined with a luxury holiday to Dubai.
Dubai and Hong Kong
A twin centre Dubai and Hong Kong holiday will expose you to two centres of international business. While Hong Kong is still the more economically powerful city of the two, Dubai's rapid growth means that it may not stay in front for long, and a trip to these two cities will allow you to compare the attractions offered by them both. If the thought of exploring two busy cities sounds too tiring, you can choose to combine a break in Hong Kong with some quality time on the beach at one of Dubai's luxury holiday resorts.
Dubai and Sri Lanka
Sri Lanka is in some ways the Dubai of South Asia, a small, rapidly developing, multi ethnic country that is becoming an increasingly popular holiday destination. For the traveler on a multi-centre holiday to these two countries, Dubai offers up striking desert landscapes and a wealthy cosmopolitan city, while Sri Lanka presents beaches, tropical forests and a more traditional island culture.
Dubai and Thailand
With Dubai renowned as one of the most exciting places to go on a city break and Thailand a long time favourite for island and beach vacation, it is natural that the two should be combined together on a multi-centre holiday. The sights and attractions of Dubai city can be combined with a trip to Koh Samui, Hua Hin, or Phuket to enjoy Thailand's relaxed atmosphere and beautiful beaches.
Dubai and the Seychelles
There could hardly be a greater contrast between Dubai city and the Seychelles, the international city and the island paradise, and this is what makes them a perfect pair of holiday destinations. Both places share is a host of luxury experiences, from the vibrant shopping culture at the Wafi Mall and Gold Souk in Dubai to the private islands and secluded beach resorts of the Seychelles.
Dubai and Oman
A multi-centre holiday doesn't have to combine a trip to two completely different cultures - often, it can give you insights into the subtle differences between two seemingly similar countries. Combining a Dubai luxury holiday with a trip to Oman will give you contrasting experiences of Middle Eastern culture - Dubai, the millionaires' playground and international business centre, and more traditional Oman, where distinctive cultural traditions still survive as part of everyday life.

Budget travel Secrets - SE Asia
This is the first travel book that I've ever read from cover to cover. I usually thumb through them to find a restaurant or a hotel, but this is a very different animal. Half travel book, half monologue, this book makes you want to buy a backpack and follow in the footsteps of the author. While not quite Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance, it is hard not to enjoy the story and look forward to the next chapters with anticipation.
The descriptions of beaches, seedy hotels, and characters on the road bring SE Asia to life. More importantly, reading it makes the reader comfortable -- and confident -- of one's ability to make a low-budget journey. The unstated fear of leaving the comfort of the 5-star hotel is really not knowing what is around the corner. Reading this book gives you a very good idea of what to expect.
If you are thinking of going to Asia, do yourself a favour. Buy this book, replan your itinerary, save a bundle and multiply your experience exponentially.
Budget travel Secrets - SE Asia Overview
Most people slow down when they retire but Des Gettinby's life has never been so busy or exciting. When his wife, Barbara, suggested a holiday traveling through Southeast Asia for 4 months, Des jumped at the opportunity. To make things more interesting they decided to set some conditions: •Minimum luggage so traveling would be light and easy •A budget of per day for 2 people. They had heard young backpackers could do it, so why couldn't they? •No plans, no bookings, just flights in and out. Des humorously retells their fantastic adventure. The author provides tips on how to easily find comfortable accommodation with en-suite for around per night. Discover the best places to visit, which bus, train or plane to catch and how to make bookings and save lots of money. The narrative makes it all sound easy - and it was. The result: two leaner, fitter and healthier people, still enjoying being together! Along the way, Des and Barb met many interesting characters, young and old, all willing to share their knowledge and friendship.

Is This Your First Time Vacationing in the United States?
Taking a vacation in the United States is a great experience for first timers. The biggest hurdle for most people is actually getting a visa to enter the United States of America. Because it is the land of opportunity, there are many instances that those who are given tourist visas overextend their stay here and try to find work. Surprisingly, those in Mexico applying for visas to visit the United States are normally given visas because it is much easier for them to cross the United States without entering a visa. If you are able to cross this hurdle and obtain a visa to visit the United States, here are some information that may be useful to you and your family:
- Plan your trip ahead of time. Careful planning takes some information and decision making. Figure out what your priorities are. Do you want to see landscapes and natural sceneries or are you pleasing your kids and going for the Amusement Parks that are in tow. Do you plan to live with friends and relatives during your stay there? You have to make sure that they know ahead of time of your visit. Try not to overstay your welcome and stay not more than 3 nights especially if you have kids in tow. In some other countries, they offer a View USA program which entitles you to fly to 3, 5 or 7 areas in the United States at very inexpensive prices. If you know which states to visit, then use this program as it becomes cheaper as well. Some of the more popular places to visit are New York, Florida, California, and Washington D.C. to name a few.
- Be wary of the laws in the United States. Driving under the Influence or DUI is strictly enforced in the United States, most especially in California. An example of this is San Diego, wherein the local dui laws are very strict. If you have the misfortune for being cited for this in that county, you may have to hire a local attorney that specializes in San Diego DUI law to help you get out of that situation. How complicated is it? You would need to have a hearing regarding your case at the Department of Motor Vehicle. The other laws that you should also be aware of are speeding laws. Certain zones have speed limits which are strictly followed. Some places even have speed traps. By following such speed zones, it lessens your chances of getting caught by radar.
Preparing for such situations in the United States will make your vacation a more enjoyable experience.
